Caution urged after recent horse and buggy crashes

Sault Ste. Marie City Fire Chief Edwin Miller says drivers must be more aware especially in snowy weather

Around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Chippewa Co. Central Dispatch received a call about a crash involving a horse and buggy and a vehicle in the entrance to Walmart off the Business Spur.

Sault Fire Chief Edwin Miller said nobody was injured in the collision.

However the horse got separated from the buggy and was captured nearby across the Business Spur.

Miller noted with the increase in snowy weather we have had lately, there have been more accidents involving buggies in the area.

"Everybody needs to be aware that stopping distances are lengthened in this weather and most of those buggies are hard to see in the snow, especially the heavy snow squalls," Miller said.

"People forget that they are around sometimes. They are not moving as fast as we are in cars. They are allowed access to the roads so we have to share the roads."

Sault Ste. Marie Fire/EMS, Sault City PD, Michigan State Police, and MyMichigan EMS all responded to the scene.
