The Lake Superior State University Health Care Center is a full family practice that offers primary care and a wide range of services.

The center offers these services on campus, and they aren’t restricted to students and employees; staff also welcome the wider community. They are accepting new patients and most insurances are accepted—please call for details.

Services exclusively for students

This time of year, one of their most popular services is their ‘Mom in a bag’.

Many illnesses students come down with are viruses, which are not treated with antibiotics. “To help our students battling a virus or who are missing home and just need one, the LSSU Health Center staff provide what we call a ‘Mom in a bag’, no appointment needed,” says Stephanie Wiessner, Practice Manager. The bag contains self-care information and over-the-counter supplies, including tissues, hand sanitizer, soup, Tylenol, Pepto Bismol/Tums, an ice pack, Emergen-C, cough drops, and more; they always have a ton of samples. It is free—just stop by the Health Center and request one.

Students have no out of pocket costs. The center does bill their insurance but they are not responsible for co-pays or deductibles.

Primary care for all

The center’s practitioners include a physician assistant, two nurse practitioners, and a collaborating physician. They can order a wide range of prescriptions and tests.

Patients seek acute/urgent care, chronic illness care, communicable disease evaluation and treatment, family planning, allergy injections, and immunizations.

“We serve LSSU students, LSSU staff, and the community,” Wiessner says.

Any LSSU employee who carries LSSU medical insurance incurs only a $10 co-pay each visit. This includes employees, staff, faculty, and their immediate families.

Other available services include:

  • Laboratory services, including on-site blood drawing and rapid mono, strep, glucose, pregnancy, urinalysis testing, Covid testing, and flu testing.
  • Family planning counseling (pregnancy test, Depo-Provera injections, birth control prescriptions, condoms)
  • Physical exams (annual physicals for women and men, CDL*, sports*, MCOLES*, Fire Science*, nursing students*, employment)
  • Additional services include STI testing and treatment, eating disorder and alcohol abuse evaluation and referral, anxiety and depression treatment, joint infections, cryo wart treatment, and treatment of sprains.

*Additional costs may apply

Immunizations and allergy shots

The center can store and administer allergy shots as part of the services for students.
Immunizations available at the health center include: TB testing, flu shot, and TDAP.
