Susan Margaret (Soper) Mackie, age 67, passed away with family and friends by her side on October 28, 2024, at the Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan after a very long battle with cancer. She was born on April 4, 1957, in Iron Mountain, Michigan, to James and Beverly (Gothe) Soper.
Sue worked at Central Savings Bank, Department of Human Services, and Community Action. It is hard to even describe how much she went through with her battle with cancer. Even with all the pain, Sue stayed strong, in good spirits, giddy, and laughing right up to her death. Sue’s final days at the hospice house were filled with many friends, visitors and loved ones. She especially loved her daughter, Shelby, and her dog, Koda.
Sue was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, whose members raised money to help her with expenses when she could no longer work. She had many co-workers and friends who loved and supported her. She was a volunteer for the March of Dimes and Walk for America for eight years.
Sue looked forward to going downstate to “Dancing with the Stars” with daughter, Shelby. She loved attending country concerts and spending time with friends and family at the beach. She enjoyed walking the Algonquin Ski Trail with her dog and picking blueberries in the woods. She would make pies and bars to give to all of her loved ones. She was an avid gardener and liked to show her flower garden to those who visited and would tell them the names of all her flowers.
Sue wanted this message shared: “My best friend Marianne, I could not have gotten through without her. Pam, Agar, Terri, Gina, Christin, Sharolyn, Sharon, and my brothers and their wives who were more like sisters. Karla and Don, Shelby and Marc, Carissa, Dave & Jeanie, Dan & Marianne. I love all kids and all animals, and enjoy being in the woods, all the seasons, but especially blueberry season!! The most important thing in my life has always been showing the people I love how much I love them. The gift of my life-Shelby, at age 39! And unexpected. My dogs, my very best friends, Molly, Bubbles, Chip, Clyde, Georgie, Chester, and now Koda.”
Sue is survived by her daughter, Shelby Mackie (Marc Pomeroy), and dogs Koda & Onyx. Brothers Dan (Marianne) Soper, Dave (Jeanne) Soper, and Don (Karla) Soper. Nieces and nephews Holly & Ashley, Carissa & Dane, Ryan & Denny.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, James & Beverly Soper.
A special thanks to the Hospice House of the EUP volunteers, doctors, nurses, church family, bank coworkers, friends, and family members.
