Meta Lucille (Shaw) Geyer, age 85, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Drummond Island, Michigan, passed peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2025, at home with her family by her side. She was born on May 3, 1939, to Alvin and Lucille (Seaman) Shaw.

Meta grew up and graduated as valedictorian from DeTour Area High School and attended Ferris State College for a year before marrying and starting a family. She returned to Lake Superior State College to graduate with honors in the corrections field. She worked for Kinross Correctional Facility in Kinross, Michigan, as a Resident Unit Manager before retiring after nineteen years

Meta was a member of the DeTour Union Church, where she was a pianist for many years. She participated in councils, schoolboards, the Presbyterian Church, Naturalist Club, the Elders, and was a care giver and patient advocate for her lifelong love, Jim Geyer and daughter Gretchen.

Meta loved God, her family, and friends. She always lived life to the fullest. Meta enjoyed traveling, being outdoors, hunting, fishing, sailing, cross-country skiing and she recorded a lot of her adventures through photographs and writing.

Meta is survived by her son, David (Jody) Geyer of Marblehead, Ohio; daughters, Jewell Geyer of DeTour, Michigan, and Ellen (Terry) Benoit of Sault Ste. Marie; stepson, James (Stacy) Geyer, Jr. of Drummond Island; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Meta was preceded in death by her partner, Jim; daughter, Gretchen; parents, Alvin and Lucille; sister, Ruthan Legault; and brothers-in-law, Peter Legault and Karl Parrish.

A Celebration of Life will be announced in the Spring of 2025.

Memorial Contributions may be made in Meta’s honor to the Mynor W. Seaman Scholarship Fund, which she initiated through the Chippewa County Community Foundation, 511 Ashmun, Suite 202, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783, in honor of her uncle.
