SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Alex Povorozniouk’s second goal of the game, coming 4:23 into overtime, helped the Soo Eagles hold off the Iroquois Falls Storm 4-3 Friday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League meeting at Pullar Stadium.

Having not lost on home ice since November 1, the Eagles started strong in an effort to collect their 11th straight triumph as the hosts, with quick markers before play was just over four minutes old.

Gabriel Clark put Sault Ste. Marie on the board at 3:42 as he came in from the point and greeted a sliding puck by wiring it into the top left corner on Iroquois Falls netminder Justin Sullivan.

Then 28 seconds later, Povorozniouk put the Soo up by a pair as he guided in a Lucas Caulfield attempt towards the target.

That tally gives Povorozniouk points in 13 consecutive outings.

Heading to the second period, the Storm scored midway through after Emrick Paradis worked his way around a defender and fired a shot that was stopped by Eagles’ starter Mason Burkes, but Andrew Scott was right there to stuff in the rebound.

Restoring their multi-marker cushion during a power play late in the session, Nolan Nemecek took a pass from Anden Marceau and ripped it past Sullivan at 17:27.

Heading to the final session, the visitors got right back in it, just 18 seconds in, when Lucas Peever powered his way down the right wing and proceeded to pump a shot past Burkes.

The Storm then tied it just over a minute later when Jack Jarvis wired an attempt from the high slot for his 11th of the season.

Staying even the rest of the period that sent it to extra time to determine the outcome.

In OT, Povorozniouk got the extra point for the Soo as he cut around a defender, fired a shot that was stopped, but he was quick to scoop up the rebound and snap in the game-winner from the left of a sprawled Sullivan to secure the victory.

Both teams play again Saturday evening with the Storm visiting the Soo Thunderbirds and the Eagles host the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.
