Winter Storm Warning for parts of the EUP for heavy squalls

1' - 2' of snow possible under the more intense and persistent snow bands through Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect until 7 a.m. Sunday for Central and Western Chippewa County and Luce County in the far Eastern U.P. including Sault Ste. Marie, Sugar Island, Dafter, Brimley, Bay Mills, Dollar Settlement, Rudyard, Kinross, Trout Lake, Eckerman, Strongs, Hulbert, Paradise, Whitefish Point, Tahquamenon Falls, Newberry.

This winter storm warning replaces the winter storm watch that was previously issued for these areas.

This is going to be a long-lived lake-effect snow event that is expected to produce 1' to 2' of snow under the heaviest squalls.

The squalls will increase later today and continue in earnest through Saturday night in many areas. Winds will be vary a bit from the W/NW to NW with speeds 10-18mph creating blowing and drifting.

During lake-effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away. Visibilities can
also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions if you must travel.  Keep headlights on for safety.
