NEWS RELEASE
BAYS MILLS POLICE DEPARTMENT
*************************
On Friday, Dec. 8, at approximately 9:40 a.m., Bay Mills Police Department responded to a trespassing call in the 12000 block of Lakeshore Drive on the Bay Mills Indian Reservation.  Upon arrival, the suspect pulled a knife on officers and threatened them.  The suspect then went onto the deck in the back of the residence, as police kept trying to talk the suspect down and for him to drop the knife. Officers from the various agencies also responded to the scene to provide assistance.  When the suspect would not respond, officers used non-lethal tactics to arrest the suspect, utilizing mace and tasers.
The suspect was secured and was transported to MyMichigan Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie for medical and mental health treatment.

During the time of the incident, several buildings in Bay Mills Indian Community were placed on lockdown as a precaution, including Bay Mills Community College, Tribal Administration, and Ojibwe Charter School. This was done as a precaution, as there was no imminent threat.

The suspect is a 28 year-old male resident of Bay Mills. No name will be released at this time. He will be lodged for one count assault on a police officer, one count of assault and battery on a police officer and resisting lawful arrest, as a sheriff’s deputy was kicked during arrest.

BMPD would like to thank Chippewa County Central Dispatch, Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, US Border Patrol, Bay Mills Emergency Connection, and Michigan State Police for their assistance in this matter.
