At about 7 a.m. Trump defied pollsters' predictions by sweeping to the Presidency when he passed the golden 270 Electoral College vote mark. By 9 a.m., some votes are still outstanding but 270 was all either candidate needed to win the White House.
"Trump could even win the popular vote, a feat no Republican has accomplished in two decades," says Politico's Steve Shepard.
The Republicans flipped seats in West Virginia, Montana and Ohio, claiming the Senate as well.
In Michigan, Elissa Slotkin (D) leads Mike Rogers (R) by about 5 per cent with just over 97 per cent of the votes counted. Slotkin, a third generation Michigander from Holly is a former CIA agent who served three tours in Iraq alongside US servicemen and women. Rogers and Slotkin are battling for the seat of retiring Senator Debbie Stabenow.
At time of writing, the four seats Michigan seats in the House that were up for grabs were pretty much decided. District 1, which includes the UP, showed 96 per cent of the votes counted and incumbent Jack Bergman (R) well ahead of Callie Barr (D).
With 99 per cent of the votes counted in District 2, incumbent John Moolenaar (R) is also well ahead of challenger Micheal Lynch (D) with just over 65 per cent of the votes.
District 3 shows 93 per cent of the votes counted and incumbent Hillary Scholten (D) ahead of challenger Paul Hudson (R) with 53.5 per cent of the votes.
In District 4, 97 per cent of the votes are counted and incumbent Bill Huizenga (R) leads challenger Jessica Swarz (D) with 55.5 per cent of the votes.
