2024 ended in Sault Ste. Marie with hundreds of people attending an evening full of fun at the annual Soo Co-Op Credit Union New Year's Eve Celebration and Anchor Drop.
Nick Nolan, Director of Marketing at the Sault Ste. Marie Convention and Visitors Bureau, issued a statement to SooLeader about the event.
Sault Ste. Marie shored up another successful New Years celebration to welcome in 2025. The annual Soo Co-Op Credit Union New Year’s Eve Celebration and Anchor Drop brought fun for all ages with two anchor drops in Downtown Sault Ste. Marie.
The event, sponsored by Soo Co-Op Credit Union and the Sault Ste. Marie Convention & Visitors Bureau, started at 6 p.m. with a scavenger hunt for children before the first anchor drop at 8 p.m. The intersection of Portage and Ashmun was filled with kids and parents counting down to welcome in the New Year while Department of Public Works workers lowered the celebratory anchor from a boom truck.
“It was so great to see all the families make their way downtown,” said Sault CVB Executive Director Linda Hoath. “We did all we could to help make this annual tradition possible this year and give our community a reason to celebrate safely downtown to welcome in the New Year.”
Following the kids’ anchor drop, the adults had their turn to welcome in the New Year at midnight. Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Don Gerrie took a moment before the clock struck midnight to speak to the crowd. The Mayor thanked everyone for a great 2024 and promised 2025 would be an even better year for Sault Ste. Marie.
The two anchor drops have been staples in Sault Ste. Marie going back to 2019. The festive anchor drop offers a unique way to celebrate Sault Ste. Marie while bringing the fun of a New Year’s celebration to the downtown area. This year’s anchor drop was put on by a team effort from the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Department of Public Works, Downtown Development Authority, Sault CVB, Sault Police Department, Sault Fire Department, and downtown businesses.
