Superhero Saturday comes to Cozy Corners in Barbeau

Event runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 24

Famous superheroes, like Batman and Elastigirl from The Incredibles, along with local superheroes including a firefighter, some police officers, an emergency medical services worker, a Coast Guard member, and a National Guard member all will be at the Superhero Saturday event on Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Cozy Corners in Barbeau.

Cozy Corners is located about 20 minutes south of downtown Sault Ste. Marie on the St. Marys River at 6800 E.15 Mile Rd.

Sara Gordon, co-owner of the Cozy Corners, is excited about the event.

"The superhero event was something I came up with after our kid's Halloween event. Batman attended that event and the kids loved him! Shortly thereafter I contacted Rob Brehm (Batman) and asked if he’d be willing to do this event and he immediately agreed. After a bit of brainstorming between the two of us, he came up with actual heroes attending. I’m certain the kids will light up with excitement not only over Batman and other superheroes like Mrs. Incredible (AKA Elastigirl) but all of the law enforcement officers and other first responders. Once I announced we were including these first responders, a couple contacted me directly because they wanted to volunteer," Gordon said.

The Michigan State Police, the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office, the Bruce Township Volunteer Fire Department, Kinross EMS, U.S. Coast Guard, National Guard will all have representatives there along with vehicles to show off.

Gordon is ecstatic that there is tremendous interest from local organizations having their Superheroes help.

"At least three of the local Superheroes will be female. Bruce Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tim Andrews is sending a female firefighter and said 'I want the little girls to see that girls can be firefighters too.' That's pretty cool," Gordon said.

Due to the lack of cold and snow this winter, Gordon had to cancel several events, including the biggest one, the St. Marys River Roar.

Gordon continues to think up ideas to bring people into the Cozy Corners and Barbeau when the weather does not cooperate.

"Being a destination restaurant means we have to be appealing to our community even more so in the winter which is why that is my 'busy time'. We have to do extra to get people out in the winter. Barbeau is a very small community and we couldn’t keep the doors open on support from the locals alone so our vision to drive business from outside of Barbeau is kicked into overdrive come October and has to last through May," Gordon said.

For the event, kid's meals are $5 each with a purchase of a regular-priced meal.
