SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - A portion of the Sault Area Middle School roof collapsed into a classroom adjacent to the gymnasium early Saturday morning, according to a news release.
This section of the roof supported a heating unit connected to the boiler system. That caused a water line to break and flood over 20,000 square feet of flooring, including the gymnasium floor, the release added.
All of this occurred at about 12:20 a.m. said the release from school superintendent Amy Scott-Kronemeyer, principal Jessica Rondeau and Trevor Adkins from the Sault Police Department.
The school is located at 684 Marquette Ave, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
"We are confident in our ability to mitigate and minimize damage to other areas of the school," the release said. "We want to assure our community that only one classroom, which is not used for daily instruction, will be out of commission.
"We are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and integrity of the building before welcoming our students and staff back. We kindly request that all residents stay clear of the affected area to ensure safety and allow our teams to work efficiently."
Scott-Kronemeyer has not been immediately available to comment to The SooLeader about the school's status for Monday.
