St. Mary's Catholic School kicked off National Catholic Schools Week Monday by having a "Celebrating our Community" event by delivering goodie bags around Sault Ste. Marie to the people and organizations who support their school and community.
This year Meijer sponsored a portion of their baskets.
Theresa Miller, Art Teacher at St. Mary's and the Event Coordinator, said Monday started the week-long celebration.
"We have been 'Celebrating our Community' for around a decade. We packaged all these bags with goodies and bring them to the companies and non-profits who support the community and St. Mary's School. Meijer made us a generous donation this year that covered most of the costs with our parents covering the rest. "We made 31 baskets that have chips, nuts, granola bars, candy and microwave popcorn," Miller said.
About ninety K-8 students from the school helped distribute the packages Monday afternoon.
"The students enjoy giving back and people enjoy our students going to their places with the baskets. Every year they look forward to this," Miller concluded.
Cortland, a 6th grader at St. Mary's has participated in this event since he was in 3rd grade.
"I say it's pretty important that we do this and deliver them," Cortland said.
"St. Mary’s Catholic School is a pre-kindergarten through grade 8 school. We provide a high-quality Catholic Liberal Arts (Classical Education) Curriculum.
"Catholic Liberal Arts are founded on the 7 classical liberal arts and seek the truth, goodness, and beauty in all creation. Through creation, we can come to know God the Creator who is the very source of all Truth, Goodness, and Beauty."
