U.S. SENATOR GARY PETERS

WASHINGTON, DC– U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement on the anniversary of Jan. 6, four years after the attack on the U.S. Capitol:

“Four years ago, our nation witnessed a grave assault on the very foundation of our democracy – the peaceful transition of power. Thanks to the courage and dedication of Capitol Police, DC Metropolitan Police, National Guard, and others, that violent attack to overturn the will of the American people failed. Today, as Congress gathers to certify the results of the 2024 Presidential Election, I’m confident that our nation’s core principle of a peaceful transition between administrations will be upheld.

“There is no question that our country faces deep political divisions, but we must recommit ourselves to strengthening our democratic institutions and ideals. Every American, regardless of their political ideology, has a responsibility to help strengthen trust in our government and ensure it can continue to deliver results for the American people.

“While we remember the anniversary of a dark day in our history and those who lost their lives and were injured in the attack, we must also come together to reinforce the importance of our most treasured democratic traditions – the right of the American people to choose their own leaders and the peaceful transfer of power.”

As Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Peters led the Senate’s first bipartisan investigation and released a joint bipartisan report on the security, planning, and response failures related to the January 6th attack. Many of the recommendations from the report to better secure the Capitol have already been implemented. He also released a report identifying significant intelligence failures by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security in the lead-up to the attack. Peters also helped pass into law reforms to the Electoral Count Act that will ensure that electoral votes tallied by Congress accurately reflect each state’s public vote for President. Peters has also led efforts to address the broader national security threat posed by terrorism.
