Two off-duty firefighters were travelling on M-129 near 14 Mile Road Thursday evening when they saw billowing smoke from a distance and rushed to the scene of what turned out to be a structure fire.
When Dafter volunteer firefighters Amy and Dan Jere arrived the attached garage was engulfed in flames. They called 911 moments after the initial call came in to Central Dispatch from a lone teenager who was home.
Dan Jere was able to help save three dogs from the fire.
First to the scene was Bruce Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Dan Jere helped the other firefighters by grabbing a line and helping put out the fire before it destroyed the house.
Kinross Volunteer, Dafter Volunteer and Pickford Volunteer Fire Departments also responded.
The Chippewa County deputy on the scene tells SooLeader that a teenage boy was outside when he heard a bang from the garage then saw smoke. He then called his father and 911.
Firefighters say the garage was destroyed with the house heavily damaged.
SooLeader will have more information as it becomes available.
