In a significant step toward ensuring that all patients can access life-saving treatment, MyMichigan Health Foundation purchased a new van dedicated to the Road to Recovery program. This vehicle will be used to transport cancer patients to and from their radiation therapy appointments from MyMichigan Medical Center Sault in Sault Ste. Marie to Petoskey, Michigan, helping to ease the burden of travel and ensuring timely care for those in need.
The Road to Recovery program, made possible by the generosity of community donors, is a vital resource for many cancer patients who otherwise face challenges with transportation. The new van is specially equipped for comfort, safety, and accessibility, providing reliable transportation and peace of mind for patients and their families.
“We are incredibly grateful for the support that made this new van possible. Transportation should never be a barrier to receiving life-saving treatment. With this additional van dedicated to serving to our Road to Recovery program, we can make sure more patients get the care they need, regardless of their access to personal transportation,” said Kevin Kalchik, president, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault. “In addition to the Foundation and community’s support, we extend our sincere appreciation to our volunteer drivers that make these daily trips possible: Tom Armstrong, Roger Bianchi, Jerry Cook, Deb Kallio, Larry Menominee, David Myton, Billy Norton, Dennis Panik, Scott Parker, Laurie Patterson, Duke Pepin, Tracy Rye, Michelle Sheckler, Joy Stevens, Lori Tomkinson and Grant Voegtline. Our program could not be success without each of them. Thank you to everyone who makes this possible. It certainly takes a village!”
In 2024 alone, the Road to Recovery program has already provided rides to 48 patients, helping them access critical radiation treatment in Petoskey with most patients needing round trip transportation for up to 28 treatments. This new van will allow the program to continue to operate safely and offers increased capacity and flexibility to serve even more patients.
The purchase of the new van was funded by donations from individuals, local clubs and businesses committed to supporting cancer patients in our community. Their support underscores the community’s shared commitment to making health care accessible for all.
