Michigan State Police Teen Defensive Driver's event Sept. 29

The event is open to anyone at least 14 years 9 months old with a level 1 permit or level 2 license and will be held at the Brimley Development Center

For the first time in the Eastern Upper Peninsula, the Michigan State Police will be holding a Teen Defensive Driving program.

The free event will be held Sunday, Sept. 29, with two time slots available, 8 a.m. - noon or 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Brimley Development Center at 9301 M-221 just south of M-28.

The event is open any teenager over than 14 years 9 months with a level 1 permit or level 2 license. As of Sept. 16, there are 16 spots still open.

Trooper Cody Mayer got the ball rolling on this program to have it local.

"Thanks to Continental Brimley Development Center for hosting the first event for the eastern end of the U.P. with plans to add another next year. This free event will help educate forty-two young drivers either just beginning or with little experience become safer drivers on the roads. Providing the youth with these opportunities makes the roads safer. Safer drivers equal less traffic crashes which results in less injuries and fatalities," Mayer said.

There is much more to this event than the defensive training.

"Along with the driving skills, teens will receive information on what to expect should they be pulled over by a police officer, as well as education on driving while impaired. Demonstrations with intoxication goggles will show the teens the dangers it poses.  During the 4 hour block teens will interact with Troopers from all across the state in a fun and engaging environment," Mayer said.
