Today, Presidential Nominee Wannabe Gretchen Whitmer signed an education budget that’s severely lacking in anything remotely positive for schools, students, or educators.

Highlights of Whitmer’s budget include:

  • Stagnating the per-pupil foundation allowance, the primary funding source for public schools. Because of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ inflation, this decision actually decreases funding. The impending result? Cuts and layoffs at Michigan schools;

  • Private organizations receiving “education” earmarks, totaling more than $400 million;

  • Mental health and school safety funding cut by 92%;

    • Detroit Public Schools will lose a projected $10.2 million;

  • Threatening educators’ retirements by raiding the teacher pension fund, diverting resources and delaying the paydown of $30 billion in unfunded pension liabilities.

“Gretchen Whiter has a track record of passing policies that only hurt Michiganders. This education budget is no different - it’s detrimental to our entire education system,” said Michigan Republican Party Chairman Pete Hoekstra. “We must take back the House this November so we can get to work on drafting policies that will help our hardworking students and teachers.”

"Governor Whitmer and the House Democrat Chaos Caucus have chosen to cut funding to our children and hardworking educators. In 105 days, Michiganders will hold them accountable at the ballot box,” said Michigan House Republican Campaign Committee Spokesman Greg Manz.
