Six feet of snow on ground, but new rec area not ready to open

Sault Seal Recreation Area spokesperson says hiring is ongoing and facility will be ready in new year

Despite the Sault Ste. Marie seeing just over six-feet of snow since Nov. 25, city officials say the Sault Seal Recreation Area is not ready to open for the winter season.

That has a lot of residents on social media wondering why.

In a statement to SooLeader, City Recreation Coordinator Trisha Kiczenski said the following:

"It will be opening in the new year.  We are in the process of hiring. That is going well.  We expect to have 15 people employed as part-time staff at the hill. We put together a FAQ sheet to help people get answers to common questions. This can be found on our website.  The weather has been deceiving this year. Although we got all that beautiful snow, the couple days of rain had grass showing at the hill again. The long-range forecast is preventing us from scheduling the hands-on training. Beginning on Christmas and stretching out for eight days, the temperatures are projected between 35-41 degrees.

"We are very anxious to open in 2025. The chalet and outbuildings have been updated with new siding, windows, and shutters. Snack and beverage vending machines have been installed. In addition to the single tube, Sault Seal Recreation Area now offers double tubes. There will be an announcement on the City’s facebook page when the tubing hill is opening."
