Meet Zukey - He needs a loving home

This mixed breed has been at the county shelter since March of 2020

Chippewa County Animal Shelter (CCAS) would like to introduce its pet of the week as Zukey.

If you imagine a circle drawn around this fur baby’s right eye, Petey of the ‘Little Rascals’ might pop to mind.

“He is friendly and excited for affection,” CCAS staff member Erin Smith said. “He just takes some time to get to know people.”

Smith recommended that any prospective dog parents meet Zukey a couple times prior to adoption. She suggests showing up prepared with treats and toys.

“Zukey has about 300 teddy bears in his cage,” Smith said. “His toys are his baby. Most dogs will tear them up. He just wants to cuddle and sleep with them.”

He is an adult mixed breed, exhibiting the physical characteristics of a pitbull with short hair and medium body build.

According to his PetFinder profile, Zukey has been neutered and is house trained. He is affectionate, playful, smart, funny, and athletic.

“He is a good dog,” said Smith. “But because of his ‘kangaroo hop,’ it’s best to be careful around small children. We have not tried him with dogs or cats.”

She identified Zukey’s perfect home to be a quiet place, where he is pampered by toys and a cozy bed.

“I think people look for younger dogs,” said Smith. “But a lot of people love pitbulls up here. You don’t have to potty train him. He knows how to sit and stay.”

Besides, Smith is a firm believer that old dogs can learn new tricks.

“People say that dogs are set in their ways but I have worked with a lot of dogs,” she said. You can teach an old dog new tricks. It is just a consistent routine of letting them out and feeding them at the same time.”

Zukey has been a shelter pet since March of 2020.

While the Chippewa County Animal Shelter receives millages, donations for extra supplies throughout the year are needed. Anyone wishing to donate may take their cash or check donations directly to the shelter or drop them off at the Chippewa County Courthouse.

The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

The phone number is 906-632-2519.
