Higher Orbits looking for students in Grades 8-12 to participate

Higher Orbits is a non-profit with the mission of promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); along with leadership, teamwork, and communication through the use of spaceflight

Higher Orbits 'Go For Launch' is returning to Lake Superior State University in a few weeks and they are looking for inspiring students who are interested in space.

According to its website, Higher Orbits is a non-profit with the mission of promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); along with leadership, teamwork, and communication through the use of spaceflight. Mankind’s journey into space serves as an ideal launchpad to excite students of all ages about STEM/STEAM and working to fulfill their dreams and ambitions while also building teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.

It's an exhilarating three-day event where aspiring astronauts and space enthusiasts in Grades 8-12 (including rising 8th graders and recently graduated seniors) will have a unique opportunity to dive into the world of space exploration, organizers say.

Students will engage in immersive, project-based activities that bring space to life including the design of a space experiment and will learn from an exceptional team including Astronaut Tony Antonelli, and Michelle Lucas.

The event runs July 23-25 inside the Cisler Center on the LSSU campus.

In 2023, Team Space-Shell Six from Sault Area Schools won the event.

Earlier this year, the six students on the team went to Cape Canaveral Florida to watch the launch of the rocket that had their winner experiment on board and take it to the International Space Station.

Chris Olson, president of the Chippewa County EDC, says interest in the space industry is growing and to have an event like this in our area is important.

"Not many like these take place in a rural area like ours.  And we like to get....the State of Michigan is trying to become a leader in the space industry and through events like this, I think this is one way to promote that.  Opportunities like this don't exist that often. It's preparing our workforce," Olson said.

The cost is $20 per student. Teams will be assigned at the beginning of the event.

The online registration deadline is July 15.
