Tears and laughter were complimented with hugs and handshakes from the faculty, family, and friends of Lake Superior State University (LSSU) degree holders this commencement day of Saturday, May 6.
Interim President Dr. Lynn Gillette opened with a congratulatory speech, following the pipes and drums of Duncan Pipes and Drums of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. Associate Dean of Student Affairs Anya Alexander regaled the audience with the Canadian and American national anthems.
Bay Mills Tribe of Chippewa Indians Tribal Chair Whitney Gravelle also spoke at commencement to wish everyone the best in their future endeavors.
44 Lake State students graduated with honors today.
Magna Cum Laude of Fisheries and Wildflife Management bachelor degree holder Simon Freeman, and fiancee Cum Laude of Elementary Education Halle Grulke stood hand in hand apart from the crowd.
"We met at LSSU in August three years ago," Freeman said. "We plan on staying in the area. We are getting married at the country club this August."
Freeman has already landed a local job at the Center for Freshwater Research and Education (CFRE). They plan to build their lives in the Sault.
