The I-500 track has long been a cornerstone of Sault Ste. Marie’s identity, a place where thrilling races and cherished traditions come alive. For generations, this iconic venue has brought the community together to create unforgettable memories. Now, the Sault Ste. Marie Convention & Visitors Bureau, Sault Area Foundation for Education and partners are embarking on an initiative to enhance the I-500 experience for fans and visitors year-round—and we need your help to make it happen.

Friday, Jan. 31, marked the launch of a grant-matching fundraiser, hosted in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) through the Patronicity platform. The goal? To raise $50,000, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the MEDC if the target is met, unlocking a total of $100,000 for the construction of a permanent structure dubbed the Trailhead Pavilion at the I-500 track. We have 60 days to get this done and know our community can rally together behind this great cause.

The proposed 40' x 80' pavilion will replace the temporary vendor tent currently in use, providing a durable and functional space for fans to enjoy food, drinks, and vendors. But this structure is more than just a shelter. It will serve as a year-round hub for community events, from the legendary I-500 Snowmobile Race to family gatherings, festivals, and other celebrations such as weddings and graduation parties.

“This pavilion represents more than an upgrade to the I-500 track—it’s an investment in our community’s future,” said Sault Ste. Marie CVB Executive Director Linda Hoath. “We’re calling on our community to help us cross the finish line. Every dollar brings us closer to making this dream a reality.”

The Patronicity fundraiser will run for 60 days. Contributions of any size are welcome, and every donation will bring us closer to reaching the $50,000 goal needed to secure the MEDC’s matching funds. Beyond donating, community members are encouraged to spread the word, share the campaign on social media, and rally support for this project.

“The I-500 track is sacred ground for Sault Ste. Marie, a place where tradition, excitement, and community intersect,” Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Don Gerrie continued. “The Trailhead Pavilion will ensure the track remains a vibrant gathering place for generations to come.”

The I-500 is more than a world-class snowmobile race—it’s a symbol of the ingenuity, passion, and pride that define Sault Ste. Marie. Let’s work together to ensure this new pavilion stands as a testament to our shared commitment to community and progress.

Visit the Patronicity campaign page at www.patronicity.com/i500 to learn more and make your contribution today. Together, we can bring this vision to life and create a brighter future for the I-500 track and Sault Ste. Marie.

The Trailhead Pavilion project is a part of the larger $2.5 million grant-funded renovations the Sault Ste. Marie CVB and City of Sault Ste. Marie have been working towards the past several years. The aim of the project is to transition the entire I-500 track area into being useable year round providing more economic opportunities for the area and more value for the community. The MEDC will hosting matching funds until April 2nd on Patronicity.
