Community Housing Network, southeast Michigan’s largest housing resource nonprofit organization, recently announced its most recent development project in Sault Ste. Marie will break ground Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, with support from state funding and the local community.
Garfield Landing, the name of the development, will be located at the former site of Garfield School at 510 E. Spruce St., Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. 49783. The historical site has been a vacant property for nearly 30 years and will soon be adapted into 14 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The surrounding property will also be home to 22 newly constructed apartments.
Local dignitaries, Community Housing Network staff and local partners including the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Central Savings Bank, the Chippewa County Community Foundation, and the Sault Ste Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians will share more about this exciting development offering 36 affordable housing apartments to residents.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with this amazing community. The Sault Ste Marie community has been integral in making this development a reality for residents. Garfield Landing will open doors for individuals and families from throughout the area to access housing,” said Marc Craig, Community Housing Network President. “Garfield Landing is a beautiful historic location. It’s an honor to restore this building into apartments that will give it a new life and purpose within the Sault Ste. Marie community. This development is part of a larger affordable CHN housing investment in the community to help bring
provide housing to individuals and families from all walks of life. Creating inclusive communities where neighbors can learn from each other is a part of CHN’s mission and we look forward to seeing that mission come to life in Sault Ste Marie."
