MyMichigan Medical Center Sault recently celebrated its three-year anniversary of partnership with MyMichigan Health, marking a significant milestone in its century-long tradition of providing exceptional health care services to the Sault Ste. Marie community.
“Our Medical Center has deep roots in the Sault, serving our patients for more than 100 years now. Throughout that time, several milestones have been achieved, and the organization has experienced many avenues of growth with much to be proud of,” said Kevin Kalchik, M.H.A., C.P.A., president, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault.
“With the climate of the health care industry today, it is and was necessary to join forces with a strong health care system. It’s our responsibility to ensure we can provide only the best in service for the next 100 plus years and, with MyMichigan by our side, we can do that.”
Since the integration in 2022, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault has made several advancements aimed at enhancing patient care and community service. These improvements include: enhanced access to specialty care in behavioral health and intensive care through telemedicine; added EMS to support longstanding local EMS agencies; new equipment and advanced technology in lab, pharmacy and respiratory services; oncology infusion pharmacy with onsite resources that provide expedited patient services; as well as resource sharing that brings additional depth of expertise with access to leadership programs, staff training, recruitment resources, and student scholarships. The Medical Center has also expanded academic partnerships.
In addition, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault has strengthened its support of the community including an increased partnership with the I-500, and partnership with Big Bear Arena, Chippewa County Health Department, Chippewa County Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Clark Township, Face Addiction Now, Kaines Klassic, Lake Superior State University Foundation, Pullar Arena, Sault Area Chamber of Commerce, Sault Ste. Marie Rotary Club, Soo Eagles, Soo Locks Children’s Museum, U.P. Superior Smiles, as well as continued activities with the Road to Recovery program and Versiti Blood Center of Michigan.
Several providers have also joined the Sault family including Urologist James Howard, M.D., Pediatrician Gabriela DeOliveira, M.D., Psychiatrist Emilia Mattioli, M.D., OB/GYN Tara Moore, M.D., Internal Medicine/Hospitalist Salahuddin Nasir, M.D., and General Surgeon Michael Paplawski, M.D. The Medical Center has also been recognized with many awards including a CMS 5-Star Rating for patient experience in discharge information, and a 2024 Governor’s Award of Excellence for attaining required milestones in All-Cause 30-Day Readmissions. What’s more, the Medical Center received an additional Health Equity Medal of Achievement in improving All-Cause, 30-Day Readmissions by using strategies to advance health equity.
“Our hope in becoming a member of the health system was to continue to improve our quality of care and offer new services for the communities we serve,” Kalchik said.
“We are delighted to be making strides in so many areas with new equipment and new providers coming on board. We couldn’t ask for a better partner.”
MyMichigan Health’s commitment to the Sault community is also evident in its substantial investments. This includes a $10 million investment in the Epic electronic medical record system, which has helped to transform patient care and telemedicine capabilities; nearly $1 million spent on updated nurse communication system equipment; approximately $2.5 million in facility upgrades that included new patient beds and renovations in the Nuclear Medicine Department, along with a nuclear medicine camera with SPECT/CT technology; a $1.5 million roof replacement project and an approved plan to enhance the Emergency Department’s entryway for improved security, which has recently been completed.
As MyMichigan Medical Center Sault continues its journey, efforts in 2025 will focus on strategic and master facility planning to ensure long-term viability and success. Recruitment will continue to prioritize primary care practitioners to better serve the community.
“Much has been accomplished in three years and there is much to look forward to,” said Kalchik.
"Together, we have and will continue to build a bright, healthy future for generations to come.”
