On Wednesday April 27, 2022, four members of the MyMichigan Health care team participated in USCG Sector Sault Straits Shield 2022 Area Maritime Security Training and Exercise Program (AMSTEP) Full Scale Exercise (FSE) on the Mackinac Straits. Emergency Medicine Providers Kyle Raycraft, M.D., and Hannah Eves, P.A.-C., along with Stephen Carlson, R.N., trauma coordinator, and Carrie Perez, R.N., education specialist, were on site to teach Stop the Bleed techniques to multiple federal and state agencies.

Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign intended to encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. Some of the techniques that the MyMichigan team assisted with were tourniquet application, wound packing, pressure techniques and other life saving techniques to help in the case of emergency.

“It was a great experience to work with law enforcement and other marine agencies to provide life saving techniques so that they can be prepared to assist in emergency situations,” Carlson shared. “While we were not in a real-life situation the simulation was very realistic and helped all involved be more prepared if an emergency arises.” Carlson added.

Senior nursing students from Lake Superior State University also participated in this event to assist as the injured parties in the simulation. “Having the students participate lets them learn and experience life saving techniques firsthand,” Perez said. “Simulations are a great way for students to experience what they could face in their careers.”
