At its regular meeting on September 16, members of Sault Ste. Marie City Commission paid tribute to 23-year firefighter, paramedic and fire investigator Jason Carstens citing his unselfish and extensive service to the community.

"As a fire investigator, Jason assisted all agencies within the county and was recognized by many for his professionalism and attention to detail," said Mayor Pro-Tem Ray Bauer. "As a community, we are all stunned by the loss of Jason."

Bauer explained that Carstens provided exceptional service to the community and was a great ambassador for it.

"Jason showcased the community's best assets to countless families and provided them with a world-class fishing experience," he said.

Bauer concluded the city's recognition of Carstens' loss by saying he will be missed by the whole community and holding a moment of silence to remember him.

As reported earlier by SooLeader, Carstens died unexpectedly on Sept. 9. Funeral arrangements for him have not yet been announced.
