Chippewa Co. Undersheriff and Sergeant receive special recognition

Undersheriff Ryan Hering and Sgt. Justin Fruchey received awards

The Undersheriff at the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office, along with a Sergeant, received special recognition for their work at the department.

Sheriff Mike Bitnar's social media posts about the awards follows.

Undersheriff Ryan Hering receives FBI award

Last week, the Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) Rebecca Marriott from the FBI visited the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office.

The ASAC is from the Grand Rapids office which is part of the Detroit Field Office. ASAC Marriott traveled up to Sault Ste Marie to deliver a FBI Directors award.  We were advised that the process to get an actual Directors award is quite thorough and not all that common.

Undersheriff Ryan Hering received the FBI Directors award for his outstanding work as team leader with his time on TRIDENT. The ASAC mentioned all the investigations, charges and convictions within the federal system that were a direct result of U/S Hering's work.

Trident investigates narcotics trafficking which often involves other parts of Michigan as well as investigations nation wide.  Many investigations that U/S Hering investigated eventually went to the federal system involving the FBI and other federal agencies.
It is quite an honor and we congratulate U/S Ryan Hering for his outstanding work.

Undersheriff Ryan Hering and Sergeant Justin Fruchey Receive MSP Awards

Monday night, Lt Rob Allen, from MSP Sault Post, presented two MSP Professional Excellence Awards.

The awards were from the multi-agency investigation into the MSP  arson and shooting incident, that destroyed multiple patrol cars at the MSP Post, which occurred back in September of 2023.

Two of our Drone pilots, Hering and Fruchey, assisted MSP with the search for the suspect and his vehicle the following morning.

Within a short time the suspect vehicle was found in a wooded area parked next to a small camper.  Hering and Fruchey were able to obtain the vehicle registration from a safe distance.

Working together the MSP was able to close the case with an arrest within approximately 12 hours of the incident.

Great work by all.
