BAY MILLS — As the nationwide housing shortage continues to impact communities across the country, the Bay Mills Indian Community is taking proactive steps to address the issue locally. With the support of a $2.9 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, construction is set to begin next year on eight new elder homes. The homes will be located on Spectacle Lake, where the tribe recently finished the first homes as part of its Elder Complex.

The two-bedroom, two-bath homes will be available to BMIC elders age 55 and up. The new homes should be completed in 2026.

"Addressing the housing needs of our community has always been a top priority for the Bay Mills Indian Community. Thanks to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, we are able to take another significant step forward,” said BMIC President Whitney Gravelle. “The construction of new elder homes at Spectacle Lake Elder Complex will not only provide much-needed housing, but also enhance the quality of life for our elders.”

In the last six years, the Bay Mills Housing Authority has added 26 new homes to their inventory. Prior to this period, a new home had not been built by BMIC in decades.

Housing shortages across the Upper Peninsula continue to be addressed, with another grant of $880k awarded to BMIC from the State of Michigan through their Missing Middle Housing Program. Funds from this grant are being utilized by the Plantation Hills Housing Development Project.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring that every member of our community has a safe and comfortable place to call home,” added Gravelle.
