Michigan State Police (MSP) Troopers from the Calumet Post responded to a fatal house fire in Portage Township at approximately 9:16 p.m. on Friday, January 7.
It had been reported that two individuals were trapped inside the home. Two victims were later confirmed dead.
An autopsy has been performed and the results are still pending. A positive identification has not been made.
Investigators believe the remains to be that of husband and wife, 32-year-old John Makela and 27-year-old Breanna Makela.
Investigators have notified the family. The coroner is using dental records and DNA to positively identify the remains.
Assisting MSP on the scene was Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Otter Lake Fire Department, Mercy EMS, Stanton Twp. Fire Department, Hurontown Fire Department, and Chassell Fire Department.
The Houghton County Medical Examiner was also called to the scene. MSP Eighth District Fire Investigator is investigating the cause of the fire.
