GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. - On Feb. 28, troopers from the Michigan State PoliceTraverse City Post responded to M-72 near N. Broomhead Road in Whitewater Township for a traffic crash.
The preliminary investigation showed that a pickup truck with two occupants was traveling westbound on M-72 when it lost control and collided with a pickup truck towing an equipment trailer traveling eastbound. After the collision, both vehicles caught fire. Two fatalities were confirmed in the westbound vehicle. The driver of the eastbound vehicle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. This investigation is ongoing.
More information will be released when it becomes available. The medical examiner’s office has identified the passenger in the westbound vehicle as a 71-year-old man from Lake City. The driver of the vehicle has not been identified.
Troopers were assisted by the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office, Whitewater Township Fire and EMS, Kalkaska Clearwater Township Fire Department, Metro Fire, MMR, WMed, Grand Traverse Medical Examiner, Grand Traverse County Road Commission, Anytime Towing, KKB Trucking out of Buckley, A-1 Environmental, and GFL Environmental.
