Despite a chilly, windy and damp Saturday morning, dozens of people came out and supported the Dafter Twp. Fire Association's 'Nutella Stack for Giving Back" fundraiser.
Around $1,700 was raised, according to Dafter Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept. Chief Austin Conway.
According to the Nutella website:
Many fire departments rely on donations received through fundraising activities such as pancake breakfasts. Nutella hopes to honor and celebrate all that firefighters do by providing them the materials and products they need to hold a fundraising pancake breakfast. Consumers (including members of fire departments) can nominate their local fire departments for a chance to receive a Nutella Pancake Breakfast Kit that contains the necessary supplies and ingredients, including pancake mix, to host their next delicious fundraiser. 100 pancake fundraising kits will be donated to local fire departments.
Three months ago, Dafter Twp. VFD was one of the 100 departments that received the fundraising kit.
"Getting that pancake package from them gave us an idea to do it for our association. We do a lot of benevolent fund work to help off-set equipment costs and other things. The association buys food and drinks for first responders. Costs continue to rise so this helps," Conway said.
Dafter Twp. VFD has 27 firefighters on staff. Ten were volunteering their time at the fundraiser.
There was much more than just delicious pancakes.
"Jere Farms donated all the meat including sausage and bacon while Postma Brothers donated pure maple syrup," Conway said.
Supporting local volunteer fire departments shows them that the community cares.
Conway said Sugar Island Volunteer Fire Dept. is having its annual fish-fry fundraiser this Saturday, August 17 and would like to see a good turnout at that event as well.
