John “Jack” Brock Holt Jr., age 93, passed away after a short battle with COVID-19 on October 22, 2024, surrounded by the legacy he and his wife Jessie had created, a loving family that carries forward their values of love, resilience, and faith.

He was born on November 1, 1930, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. Jack and his family moved to Pekin, Illinois, in 1936. Raised in difficult times during the Great Depression, Jack’s early years were defined by hardship, frugality, and a loving family. The eldest of three children, he learned the value of hard work early on. In 1948, Jack enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Alaska before being deployed to Korea, where he fought bravely. His time in Korea left him with vivid memories of sacrifice and survival. His experiences during the war forged his resolve and stayed with him throughout his life, shaping his views on the importance of peace. In 1953, Jack returned home and married the love of his life, Mary-Ann Jessie Evans (known to everyone as Jessie) in Sault Ste. Marie. Their connection was instant, and they quickly built a life together and raised eight children; Johnny, James (Jim), Cheryl, Charlene, Christine, Jolene, Micheal (Knute), and Carol (Budge). Jack was deeply committed to his family, providing for them through his many trades, as a millwright, electrician, steel guitarist, mechanic, and anything else he could pick up. He served as the township supervisor on Sugar Island for two terms, where he led the efforts to set up the Sugar Island Ambulance Corps, the Volunteer Fire Department, and the Senior Center. He was one of the longest active members of the Sault Ste. Marie Country Club, where you could often find him out on the links. He once served as the colonel of the American Legion Post 3 SSM. He was also one of the original members of the Sugar Island Boys. He always felt it was important to serve his community and make it a better place for everyone.

Jack and Jessie shared an enduring faith, attending Catholic church every Sunday and making family their top priority. When Jessie passed away in 2015, Jack was heartbroken but kept her memory alive in his daily life, speaking with her in his heart and holding onto the love they had built.

Jack is survived by his seven children, 44 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Carmen. He will be dearly missed by his entire family.
