Donald James Logan, age 74, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on January 28, 2025, at Ball Hospice House. He was born on March 6, 1950, in Dunkirk, New York, to William Angus and Betty Jean (Medley) Logan.
Don grew up in New York and graduated from Fredonia High School. After earning his Associates Degree in Food Science from SUNY Morrisville, Don answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the Navy. He served with distinction as a Radioman Petty Officer 3rd Class from 1970-1972 on USS Claude V. Ricketts (DDG-5), honing his skills in communication and dedication to duty. Upon his honorable discharge, Don's journey led him to Athens, Georgia, where he embarked on a successful career in the restaurant industry. He rose through the ranks, managing several Ponderosa restaurants, eventually returning to his home state of New York. Don then embarked on a new path as a Paramedic, a profession he embraced with pride and compassion. His dedication to helping others defined this chapter of his life. Prior to his well-deserved retirement, Don transitioned to PNC Bank, where his strong work ethic and attention to detail served him well.
While residing in New York, Don's path crossed with Brenda's, and their shared love story began. Together, they sought the beauty of the American West, relocating to Montana to immerse themselves in its majestic landscapes. Their journey eventually led them to Michigan, where they settled in Sault Ste. Marie in 2003.
Driven by a desire to serve his community, Don dedicated much of his life to firefighting. He volunteered for the Murray Hose Co. 4 Fire Department in Dunkirk, NY, where he was also an active member of their Drum and Bugle Corps. He later volunteered with the Elmira Heights Fire Department in Elmira Heights, New York, eventually rising to the rank of Captain. His passion for service continued after his move to Montana, where he volunteered with the Big Butte, MT Fire Department.
Throughout his life, Don pursued a wide array of hobbies and interests. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in hunting, camping, and hiking. His love for the outdoors was only matched by his passion for Jeeps, which he meticulously maintained and often used for his adventures. He was passionate about cooking, spending countless hours collecting recipes and experimenting with new flavors, though his heart always returned to his favorite: the classic cheeseburger. Don also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and cheering on his beloved Buffalo Bills.
Donald is survived by his wife, Brenda (Rathbun) Logan; son, Scott Logan; daughter, Heather (David) Logan-Myers; brothers, Thomas (Linda) Logan and Jeffery (Karen) Logan; first wife, Cheryl (Kulig) Evans; and grandchildren, Alexis Logan, Noah Logan, Madisyn Labuski, Juliana Labuski, and Gavin Myers.
