Lake Superior State University (LSSU) has announced that it will discontinue sponsorship of its men’s and women's golf and men's and women's tennis programs effective June 30, 2025. This decision, while difficult, was made in alignment with the university’s commitment to upholding its mission, values, and standards related to the student-athlete experience.
“Our goal is to provide the best student-athlete experience possible, and we are better positioned to achieve our objectives when we concentrate our finite resources on fewer programs,” said LSSU Director of Athletics Tory Lindley. “These changes also reflect the realities of the transformational shifts impacting college athletics on a national scale. This is undoubtedly a challenging time for many within our community, but I am confident that this is the best decision to move LSSU Athletics forward.”
LSSU conducted a comprehensive review of its athletic programs to ensure the department is best positioned to support its student-athletes and maintain competitiveness in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
“It’s difficult to achieve clarity in the ever-changing landscape of higher education, but this is precisely the time to act,” said LSSU President Dr. David Travis. “We must keep the bigger picture in mind and work together to ensure the continued success of LSSU. This year has been marked by thoughtful reflection and difficult choices, and we are committed to strategically aligning our resources with our greatest priorities.”
While recognizing the impact this decision has on affected student-athletes, coaches, and alumni, LSSU leadership emphasizes the necessity of realigning resources to uphold the university’s commitment to a high-quality and transformative academic and athletic experience.
“We appreciate that this is incredibly disappointing for our tennis and golf student-athletes, coaches, and alumni,” Lindley added. “However, through careful analysis and discussions regarding current and projected departmental resources, we determined that this step is necessary for the continued success of LSSU Athletics.”
LSSU Athletics will work closely with affected student-athletes to support them through this transition and provide guidance on their academic and athletic futures.
