For the next two weeks, the City of Sault Ste. Marie Parks and Recreation Dept. is holding a scavenger hunt that promises fun for the whole family.
The Star Search scavenger hunt starts Dec. 20 and ends Jan. 2. Winners will be announced Jan. 7.
This is the 5th annual scavenger hunt. The first hunt started in Dec. 2020 in the heart of the COVID pandemic. More and more families are participating. Last year, over 100 people took part in the hunt.
Trisha Kiczenski, Recreation Coordinator, is excited about this year's event.
"We want the hunt to be fun. The purpose is to get outside and enjoy the area. It’s a nice activity for friends and family of all ages. This year may be slightly more challenging. It will take place along a wooded trail. We have volunteers willing to help keep the trails packed down. Weather conditions will play a factor. The contest runs for 2 weeks, so I am sure there will be some nice days in there. It has been modified to add variety each year. This year the theme is falling stars that were lost because they were chasing snowflakes. So far the weather has been right in step with our theme," she said.
For those who complete the scavenger hunt, there are some great prizes to be won donated by local businesses.
"There are amazing prizes donated by Soo Eagles Hockey, Ace Hardware, Cup of the Day, Walmart, Das Gift Haus, Birds Eye Outfitters, The City of Sault Ste. Marie," she said.
This is an excellent chance to head outdoors with the family with students on Christmas break.
"To me, the holiday contest is huge. It’s great to see people going on this hunt together, having fun, and making unique memories. I love the photos they share! They are heartwarming. The contest is simple by design. It is free to participate, but the reward goes beyond measure. I still remember a “Turkey Hunt” contest in the Sault when I was a kid. Clues were announced over the radio and the first person to find the envelope won a turkey (certificate). My dad won it one year. I am guessing it was in 1978, and I still remember it," she added.
