21 people died on Michigan roadways since last week making a total of 690 this year. In addition, 120 more were seriously injured for a statewide total of 3,468 to date.
Compared to last year at this time there are 33 fewer fatalities and 100 fewer serious injuries.
Numbers are provided by the Michigan State Police.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has teamed up with the Automotive Safety Council (ASC) to pilot orange lane markings leading in and out of an active freeway work zone. As the voice of the automotive safety supplier industry for 60 years, ASC is looking to better understand if using orange lane markings will allow advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to differentiate from the current white and yellow road markings, as well crack sealing and areas that have had grinding. If orange lane marking recognition is found to be valuable, areas of sealing and grinding that cause artificial intelligence (AI) systems confusion could be avoided.
MDOT has selected the Flex Route project on eastbound I-96 between Kent Lake Road and I-275 in Oakland County to test the orange lane markings. This pilot involves the placement of orange edge and lane lines along the shifting transition sections of I-96 within the project limits. It will allow MDOT to study the human factor and determine the perception of drivers who use this stretch of road daily. Orange lane markings could be a potential work zone safety measure that would increase driver awareness and safety within work zones.
We want to hear from you. If you drive eastbound I-96 between Kent Lake Road and I-275, please complete the survey here.
