Soo Township Volunteer Fire Department was called out around 3 p.m. today for black smoke coming from a room at Superior Place Motel and Extended Stay on the Business Spur just outside the Sault Ste. Marie city limits.
Nobody was in the room at the time of the call. A resident in the room next door smelled smoke, walked outside and saw black smoke coming out of the heating unit.
When firefighters arrived, they entered the first floor, smoke-filled room and disconnected the power cord to the exhaust fan in the bathroom.
The building was evacuated.
Sault City Fire Department's Aerial Ladder Truck was called in to assist, if needed. Michigan State Police, Soo Tribe Conservation, and U.S. Border Patrol were all at the scene.
Nobody was injured. The scene was cleared just after 4 p.m.
