On Sat. Nov. 23, Lake Superior State University (LSSU) is hosting the FIRST LEGO League Challenge Qualifier.

The event will be held at the LSSU Arts Center with opening ceremonies at 9 a.m.

Six teams of 3rd to 6th-grade students from Eastern-UP schools are participating.  Teams present their robot design and an innovation project to a set of judges.

The teams also build and program a LEGO robot to navigate an obstacle course to complete a set of missions.

The winning team advances to the Michigan state championship in January.

Dr. Andrew Jones is Coordinator of Electrical and Computer Engineering Programs and Event Director.

"LSSU is excited to host this event again for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.  FIRST LEGO League provides opportunities for elementary students to explore new ideas, be creative, respect one another, learn how to impact the world and develop teamwork skills.  LSSU is eager to collaborate with the local schools to support the students and the positive attributes that FIRST encourages," stated Jones.

In addition to this event, LSSU will also host the FIRST Robotics Kickoff in January and the FIRST Robotics Competition in March, both of which are for high school students.
