There are 12 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) athletic teams and two ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) athletic teams at Lake Superior State University.
Talented athletes make up each team.
Most of the time, fans are unable to interact with them on game day but this Sunday, Sept. 17, fans can meet them at Lake Superior State University's (LSSU) inaugural Family Fun Day.
LSSU's Athletics Department is holding its inaugural Family Fun Day from noon to 3 p.m. at the LSSU Norris Center's Student Activity Center.
It's an event that welcomes all families and community members to partake in carnival-style games, bouncy houses, raffles and more. Free ice cream cones will be served up by some of the athletes. Pizza and pop will be available to purchase.
Lindsey Tonello, who is on the Track and Field team and the Women's ACHA Hockey team, is looking forward to meeting the fans.
"We (the Women's Hockey Team) will be scooping up ice cream for those who come. We have around 1,000 scoops to give away. We want the community to come and hang out with us, interact with them, and experience being in the place where pretty much every team practices here at the Norris Center," Tonello said.
Aaron Nachazel, who is on the Cross Country and Track and Field teams, is another athlete who will be at the Fun Day event on Sunday.
"I attend this university and consider myself part of the community now that I have been here for four years. It's a good way to meet the people who are in the stands watching the games. Like at the basketball and hockey games, the fans never really have a chance to interact with them and see the human side of them. So this event is a great way for the fans to experience that," Nachazel said.
The event is open to all ages. Those 18 years and younger get in free. The cost is $5 each for those over 18.
All proceeds from the event will support the success of Laker Athletics.
