Local renewal of historic 1607 covenant with God

'On April 26, 1607, three ships carrying 104 colonists arrived at Cape Henry near modern day Virginia Beach,' New Covenant Church parishioner Jeanne Tubman said. 'We will gather around our wooden cross to pray the original prayer of the settlers'

New Covenant Church Pastor Lou Bergman and his congregation invite the community to reaffirm America's historic 1607 covenant with God by meeting around an old wooden cross tomorrow at 6 p.m.

“Honoring the Lord Jesus is paramount in the Sault, where the heart’s desire for the glory of God can be seen,” Bergman said, dating the city’s history to 1668 when Jesuit Missionary Fr. Jacques Marquette named the new European settlement Sault Ste. Marie.

Community members are encouraged to remember their history, as they celebrate the nation's covenant. More than 1,000 miles east of the Sault, fellow Christians will pray in the place where it all began.

“On April 26, 1607, three ships carrying 104 colonists arrived at Cape Henry near modern day Virginia Beach,” parishioner Jeanne Tubman said. “We will gather around our wooden cross to pray the original prayer of the settlers.”

Pastor Robert Hunt led colonists in the following prayer 415 years ago:

“Land, and ourselves, to reach the People within these shores with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to raise up Godly generations after us, and with these generations take the Kingdom of God to all the earth. May this Covenant of Dedication remain to all generations, as long as this earth remains, and may this Land, along with England, be Evangelist to the World. May all who see this Cross, remember what we have done here, and may those who come here to inhabit join us in this Covenant and in this most noble work that the Holy Scriptures may be fulfilled.”

Around 15 area church congregations have received invitations to renew this historic covenant.

“The move of God is strong here,” Bergman said of Sault Ste. Marie. “I believe renewal will happen.”

Led by Bergman, New Covenant Church will commemorate its 1607 covenant with God for the prosperity of the United States on Wednesday, April 26 at 6 p.m. The church is located at 558 Bingham Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Its phone number is 906-259-1213. All are welcome to attend. Learn more about America's covenant with God, here
