Tomorrow is the first ever Kids Day at Chippewa County Fair, where law enforcement demonstrations will be conducted on site to include emergency response and recreational enforcement equipment.
Chippewa County Sheriff Michael Bitnar has partnered with Michigan State University Extension 4-H Director Maggie Merchberger and Skerbeck Entertainment Group to run Kids Day from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
“It is totally family oriented,” said Bitnar. “It is all about the kids. They can come meet with me and the deputies. It's about getting involved with the children at an early age. So that at some point in their life, if they need us, they will come to us.”
The sheriff's office will hold two separate drone demonstrations. Kids and families can learn about snowmobiles, off-road-vehicles, boats, and the sheriff’s hovercraft.
“We allow the kids to sit on the snowmobile and get pictures with it,” said Bitnar. “We give them all kinds of safety stuff.”
Participating kids will receive coloring books geared towards safety and free stuffed animals.
Anit-drug, anti-bullying, bike safety, Internet safety, general safety, senior safety items and information on human trafficking will be provided.
Kids Day is a great way for kids and families to learn about 4-H clubs and activities. Sheriff Bitnar said he hopes its presence helps increase youth 4-H involvement.
According to 4-H.org, 4-H works in cooperation with 100 public universities across the country to provide interactive educational experiences for youth, while giving them a voice to express themselves and improve their communities.
“That is one of the good things about 4-H,” Merchberger said. “You learn leadership and community service.”
Scholarship opportunities may be available for participating members who qualify. Children ages five to 19-years-old may join 4-H free of charge.
Wednesday’s fair schedule is lined up with fun events all day long, many of which involve Chippewa County 4-H.
Market goat judging will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday inside the covered showing ring. Youth exhibits will run from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sheep judging will follow at 2:15 p.m.
USA Demo Derby will present stock autocross and minivan demolition derby finale at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The event is sponsored by Green for Life.
Wristbands will be available for $25 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Skerbeck advance sale mega bands can be purchased for $90, so that avid fair goers can ride all week long without spending extra cash. Be sure to purchase mega bands online before 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Mega Band purchase does not include gate admissions to the fair.
Individual tickets will be sold four for $5 or at sheets of 50 for $50. Rides require three to six tickets each, apart from the Top Gun Ride. That ride requires 12 tickets or a wristband/mega band plus four additional tickets. Height restrictions do apply for the Top Gun Ride.
Be sure to think of Sault Area Blue Devils Varsity Softball teammates Augusta (Gussy) Smith and Lucy Huskey who are raising money to represent the area and country when they compete internationally at The Cup fast-pitch softball tournament in the Netherlands from Jan. 11 to Jan. 18.
Smith and Huskey have recently teamed up with Anytime Towing to host a 'Smash a Car' Fundraiser on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Chippewa County Fairgrounds.
The Chippewa County Fairgrounds is located in Kinross, Michigan 49752. It is one mile off I-75 Kinross exit 378 in the Kinross Township Community Park.
