Kaines Ice Rink officially opened up for the season this past weekend to the public, but due to vandalism that occurred, the city is going to have it open for only hourly rentals until further notice.
Someone, or people, broke lights, stole vacuum parts, put holes in the wall, broke outlet covers, and smashed beer bottles.
Trisha Kiczenski, City Parks Director, said the rink was unlocked for open skate Saturday at 8 a.m. and locked at 10 p.m.
"The rink was unlocked for open skate. The rink was available for drop-in public skating. It is very discouraging (about the vandalism). We were happy to have Kaines open for public use. There is a lot of work getting the ice ready with many hard-working volunteers dedicating their time there," Kiczenski said.
Volunteers spent Sunday cleaning up the damage.
There are no security cameras at the rink, by Kiczenski says they are now considering installing some.
If you have any information about the vandalism, Kiczenski says to call Central Dispatch non-emergency number at (906) 495-3312.
The rink is mostly used for youth ice hockey.
Kaines Classic and Klash at Kaines are two popular tournaments held there.
Private parties and skate practices are also often held there.
Rental is $25 an hour for youth recreation and $40 an hour for adult residents.
In 1963, the city purchased the structure for $1 from Anna C. Kaine, John Kaine’s widow, and it has been the home to hockey games and events for more than six decades.
Kaines Rink is located at 1001 E. Easterday Ave.
