Around 1:45 p.m. today, a person waved down a Sault Ste. Marie City Police Officer this afternoon after they noticed smoke coming out the back of a house at 803 John Street.
The officer pounded on the door and woke up the owner, who was asleep upstairs.
The owner tells us he then ran downstairs to the basement to get his father-in-law out.
He said there were flames and plenty of smoke.
Pets inside the house all made it out safely and firefighters cleared the scene around 4:45 p.m.
Fire Chief Ed Miller said it is unknown if there were working smoke alarms in the house.
He said that is concerning.
"We didn't hear any and the occupants were not alerted by smoke alarms. We have not found any yet but will be back at the house tomorrow (Wednesday) to continue the origin and cause investigation," Miller said.
The father-in-law was transported to the hospital as a precaution, according to Miller.
