The Bayliss Public Library has a busy September lined up.

Here's everything happening at the library next month, in chronological order:

  • Sept. 1: Autumn book bingo for adults begins and will run until Nov. 30. The sheets will be available at the circulation desk starting in September. After completing the sheet, they can enter into the raffle where three people will each win $50 in Chamber Bucks.
  • Sept. 6: 906 Day! Anyone who comes in wearing plaid that day will receive a pass for a free DVD rental. We will also host a competition for a prize. Participants just need to submit a photo of them wearing as much plaid as possible. We will post a compilation of the contestants and our followers will vote on Facebook.
  • Sept. 7 at 10 a.m.: Adult coloring with refreshments. All supplies provided.
  • Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.: Movie matinee. Due to licensing, we cannot release the titles over the Internet, so anyone interested has to call or stop in to find out what will be playing.
  •  Sept. 10 at 10 a.m.: Building club for children! Due to copyright, we cannot specify the actual material being used, but they are toy bricks that children can build things with.
  • Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the LSSU Arts Center: Irene Miller will be speaking to the public about her Holocaust survival, experience, and her life afterward. This event is open to the general public and is free; however, seating is limited in the theatre and we are expecting a large turnout, so I would advise anyone who really wants to attend to get there early. I do not have an answer yet whether this event will be recorded.
  • Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.: Movie matinee.
  • Sept. 14 and 15 at 6:30 p.m.: The Soo Film Fest will be screening their selections in the library.
  • Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.: Adult sensory storytime. This is a program I run intended for adults across all functioning levels. The event usually starts with a game, then a reading of some sort (not just books), and then a hands-on activity which involves the “sensory” part. It would be helpful for me to know how many are showing up, so calling is encouraged, but not required.
  • Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.: Adult autumn craft. The craft has not yet been chosen, but it will still take place regardless. Patrons must register in advance and there is a limit of 10 spots.
  • Sept. 24 at 10 a.m.: Building club for children.
  • Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.: Movie matinee.
  • Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m.: Children’s storytime with a reading and a craft to follow. This storytime is geared towards preschool-aged children but all are welcome, including toddlers and older children. The Children’s Librarian requests that patrons call us to sign up their child so that she knows how many supplies to prepare.
  • Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.: A program entitled, “Historical Food and Gardening in the Upper Peninsula: Russell Magnaghi.” Russell is joining us from Marquette. He is an Upper Peninsula historian (super cool!) and he taught at NMU for nearly five decades. Currently, he writes books and travels around the region to taste and write about restaurants and dishes here. In his program, he will touch on many topics related to the UP and the EUP, but overall the program will revolve around gardening and food production here.
  • Sept. 28 at 10 a.m.: Children’s storytime; same policy as above.
  • Sept. 30 at 10 a.m.: Children’s storytime; same policy as above.
