The former president of the Sault Area Little League (SALL) was charged Wednesday in Chippewa County District Court of embezzling more than $20,000 from the program.
Derek O'Dell, current president of SALL, told SooLeader that they investigated suspicious transactions over a two-year period when Matt Hudecek was in charge at that time.
The board went over the transactions and noticed there were forged checks with early withdrawals or checks written directly to Hudecek.
"It's a substantial amount of money from the little league's account into what seemed to be a personal account," O'Dell said.
O'Dell is going to make sure that all money is accounted for from now on.
"This year, definitely more transparent. We are having meetings where our financial aspect comes up right away. We put it out there that we are going to break down so all the families know where the money goes," O'Dell said.
Hudecek was released on personal recognizance bond and will be back in court Dec. 19 for a probable cause conference, which gives a chance for the defense and prosecution to discuss the case, and is usually the first time the defense can advocate for their client.
None of the allegations have been tested in court and Hudecek is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
