Former House of Bargains building to be demolished

Cloverland has owned the property since 2016

The former House of Bargains building located in downtown Sault Ste. Marie will be demolished next year.

According to Allie Brawley, director of communications and member relations at Cloverland, said the demolition will take place in spring 2024.

The House of Bargains building, located at 567 Ashmun St., will be carefully deconstructed due to safety concerns that could impact the surrounding community and operations of the canal which fuels Cloverland Electric Cooperative’s hydroelectric plant.

Cloverland has owned the property since 2016 and conducted extensive research and analysis on potential redevelopment options.

“Ultimately, the costs to preserve the building, estimated to cost between $10,000,000 and $18,000,000, were too immense for the cooperative to justify to our membership of 34,000 across the Eastern Upper Peninsula,” said Cloverland Electric’s President and CEO Mike Heise.

House of Bargains was in that building from 1976 to early 2016. It closed for good due to economic reasons.

Cloverland Electric Cooperative gives notice that emailed bids sent to the attention of Scott Ellis at [email protected] for the 567 Ashmun Street Demolition Project.

Emailed bids will be received until 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023.
