Fire destroys cabin in Chippewa County Sunday evening

Explosions were heard before firefighters arrived, according to a nearby resident

Three volunteer fire departments were dispatched Sunday evening to a structure fire at 2143 S. M-123 in Chippewa County.

The cabin is about 75 feet back from M-123.

It is located 9 miles north of Eckerman and about 40 minutes west of Sault Ste. Marie.

The call came in around 8 p.m. with Hulbert Township and Whitefish Township Volunteer Fire Departments the first to be dispatched.

About 30 minutes later, Bay Mills Township Volunteer Fire Department was also sent to the scene.

Two retired firefighters, Tommy and Dale Roach, took pictures of the devastating fire soon after it erupted.

They told SooLeader that the owners of the cabin live downstate and nobody was home.

They also said there were explosions before firefighters arrived.

SooLeader will have more information as it becomes available.
