Facelift continues on Sault Ste. Marie water tower

A new design on the tower is expected to be completed by Labor Day

It's a story SooLeader first brought you last November.

The Sault Ste. Marie water tower located on 4th ave. by Lake Superior State University is getting an overdue facelift.

The past couple of months, crews have been getting the water tower ready to be painted with a whole new look.

In early winter 2023, the city held a contest for artists to come up with a design for the new tower. Mallory Young took top honor.  Now, her winning design is just a couple weeks away of being completed on the tower.

"The water tower painting is progressing nicely," said Kirk Tews, Water Director for Sault Ste. Marie. "They are working on the intermediate coat and final stripe coat on the interior surfaces this week.

"The outside is almost complete with the intermediate coat. They will work on the final stripe coat of the exterior the week of the 19th and hopefully be placing the lettering and logo the week of the 26th. All weather dependent but hope to have the tower back in service after Labor Day."
