Everything you need to know about this year's Chippewa County Fair

'Our goal is to put on fun events families can come to without spending a lot of money,' says event advertiser Michael Zimmerman

The Chippewa County Fair will kick off today by crowning this year’s Miss Chippewa County Fair Queen inside the 4-H building at 7 p.m. 

Campers can start arriving to the fairgrounds after 12 p.m.

Fair week will include a youth day with 4-H Director Maggie Merchberger and Chippewa County Sheriff Michael Bitnar on Wednesday, Aug 31. The sheriff's office will put on two drone demonstrations from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. 

Sheriff Bitnar will also be at the fair on Thursday, Sept. 1 for special needs day to get to know kids and their families. Thus far, more than 100 families have signed up for special needs day. 

Be sure to get to the Kinross Speedpark for its 2022 season championship on Friday, Sept. 2. This is the race track's most attended day of the year. 

“The fair is family friendly,” said event advertiser Michael Zimmerman. “We try to keep it as agricultural as possible and still provide all the fun. Our goal is to put on fun events families can come to without spending a lot of money.”

Chicken and rabbit enthusiasts are scheduled to bring their favorite little critters to the fair tomorrow, Sunday, Aug. 28. 

Rabbit judging will be conducted at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 29. Participants will bring in market livestock and breeding animals from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Youth exhibits will open from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 

Poultry judging will take place at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30 inside the poultry barn. Youth exhibit judging will start at 9 a.m. at the 4-H building. Youth exhibits will be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. 

Bingo players are expected to congregate at the Dunbar Building from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Pocket pet judging will be held at the rabbit barn at 3 p.m. Vendors are scheduled to start selling from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. 

The Miss Chippewa County Fair Queen will be introduced at 7:30 p.m. in the grandstands area, prior to the USA Demo Derby at 8 p.m. Viewers will watch power wheel race, stock bump n’ run, minivan heats, and rear wheel demolition derby as sponsored by Green for Life.

Once again, Wednesday is youth day with the sheriff's department and 4-H. There will be gift bags and demonstrations.

Swine judging will take place at 9 a.m. that same day. Expect vendors to start selling arts, crafts, and other items from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. 

Skerbeck Entertainment Group will have rides and games ready at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Wristbands will be available for $25 at the following times: Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m; Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m; Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m; Saturday from noon to 5 p.m; and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Labor Day special costs $2 for rides and will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Skerbeck advance sale mega bands can be purchased for $90, so that avid fair goers can ride all week long without spending extra cash. Be sure to purchase mega bands online before 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Mega Band purchase does not include gate admissions to the fair.

Individual tickets will be sold four for $5 or at sheets of 50 for $50. Rides require three to six tickets each, apart from the Top Gun Ride. That ride requires 12 tickets or a wristband/mega band plus four additional tickets. Height restrictions do apply for the Top Gun Ride.

Market goat judging will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday inside the covered showing ring. Youth exhibits will run from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sheep judging will follow at 2:15 p.m.

USA Demo Derby will present stock autocross, minivan demolition derby finale, stock autocross, and minivan demolition derby finale at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The event is sponsored by Green for Life.

Special needs activities are scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office will put on a cookout for families at the Sheriff's display at noon. Carnival rides begin at 1 p.m. 

“We are open to do carnival rides with Skerbeck for our special kids day,” said Zimmerman. “It is only open to those kids. There will be no flashing lights or loud sounds. It has gotten bigger every year. One mother came up to me one year to say it was the first ride her daughter had ever been on. It was very cool.” 

Beef judging will also be held on Thursday inside the covered show ring. Meanwhile, the garden tractor pull will be revving engines inside the tractor pulling area. The antique tractor pull will take place after at 11 a.m. Vendors will sell their goods from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday. Bingo will be inside the Dunbar building at 11 a.m. 

4-H Youth exhibits will run from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Small animal overall showmanship will be held at the poultry and rabbit barn at 3 p.m. 

The open pony pull will be at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday. This event has been sponsored by Louie's Well Drilling and Mayer Pump Service.

Friday is Meijer Day with all day antique equipment demonstrations. It is also the biggest Kinross Speedpark race of the year with the 2022 season championships presented by Anytime Towing.

Extending through Saturday is Kinross Speedpark's 16th running Year-End Invitational. It is the final round of the Upper Peninsula Triple Crown Series

Garden tractor pulling will gear up to go at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Dairy judging will take place at 10 a.m. and goat judging at 11 a.m. The farm stock tractor pull will begin at 11 a.m. This is around the time vendors will start selling their items. 

The horse show starts at noon inside the horse arena for some Chippewa County Fair “speed and action.”

Carnival rides and Bingo begin at 1 p.m. If hungry, enjoy a chili cook-off at 2 p.m.

4-H Youth exhibits will be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. inside the 4-H building. Sheep and goat costume showing will start at 5 p.m. 

The supreme showman contest will take place in the covered show ring at 6 p.m. 

Get ready for Fox Boyz Stock Car Racing at 7:30 p.m. as sponsored by Meijer.

The garden tractor pull will take place in the tractor pulling area at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3. Expect to see all day demonstrations of antique equipment. 

Youth exhibits will take place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Vendors will get to selling again at 11 a.m. Carnival rides begin at noon in conjunction with the market livestock buyer’s diner inside the 4-H building.  

Bingo is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Dunbar building. The market livestock sale will start at 1:30 p.m. 

The antique tractor parade will be at the grandstands around 6:30 p.m., followed by the Dafter Lion's Mud Run at 7:30 p.m. The mud run was sponsored by Chippewa County International Airport. 

The Chippewa County Fair exhibitor's barn dance will be held from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. inside the covered show ring. The dance was sponsored by Old Mission Bank.

At 9 a.m. on Sunday morning horse shows will begin in the halter, English, western, trail, and special needs classes.  

Join in for worship service at 9 a.m. in the grandstands area. 

Also at 9 a.m, the dead weight tractor pull will be held at the tractor pulling arena. Master Stockman registration begins at noon, along with carnival rides and vendor sales. Pedal pullers will take place at the Quonset hut area at  12:30 p.m. Master Stockman will start at 1 p.m. at the covered show ring. 

Youth exhibits will run from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the 4-H building. Bingo will go from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. 

The tri-county speed horse contest will be held in the horse arena at 5 p.m.  

An Eastern Upper Peninsula (EUP) music festival will start strumming guitars at 7 p.m. in the grandstands area. The event was sponsored by Fernelius Hyundai and Edgerly Sew&Vac. Admissions will be granted by donation to support United Way of the EUP. 

Finishing things up on Monday September 5, a car show will be held in front of the 4-H building. Carnival rides will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  

Tonight’s Miss Chippewa County Fair Queen Contest was sponsored by C.S. Mulder Funeral Home Inc., Chippewa County Credit Union, Cloverland Electric Cooperative, Rob Stratton, Judge Eric G. BluBaugh, and Fernelius Hyundai.

Be sure to think of Sault Area Blue Devils Varsity Softball teammates Augusta (Gussy) Smith and Lucy Huskey who are raising money to represent the area and country when they compete internationally at The Cup fast-pitch softball tournament in the Netherlands from Jan. 11 to Jan. 18.  

Smith and Huskey have recently teamed up with Anytime Towing to host a 'Smash a Car' Fundraiser on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Chippewa County Fairgrounds.

The girls will be serving burgers with the Lions Club Friday from 11:30 to 8 p.m. at its tent.

In a separate fundraising event from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, fair goers can dunk Smith and Huskey in a big tank of water.
