Early morning Dafter Twp. fire destroys commercial storage building

The Dafter Fire Chief determined that the building and its contents destroyed in the fire, which will be investigated by the Michigan State Police Fire Investigator

An early morning fire destroyed a commercial building in Dafter Township that, fire personnel said,  housed machinery, heavy equipment and cars.

The call came into 9-1-1 around 5:30 a.m. from a passerby driving down 6 Mile Road west of M-129.

Dafter Township Volunteer Fire Department was first on the scene within minutes of the call.

Soo Township, Bay Mills, Pickford, Bruce Township and Superior Twp. Fire Volunteer Fire departments all responded to the scene with Sault City Fire Department assisting by opening up a city fire hydrant to fill the tankers.

Around 90,000 gallons of water was used to fight the fire along with some new technology.

"We used a new tool we acquired recently called the Blitz Fire and we also used our ground monitor. Those are high-flow water stream devices. We also used Bay Mills' ladder truck and we were able to spread a lot of water with that," said Austin Conway, Dafter Fire Chief.

Conway determined that the building and its contents destroyed in the fire warranted a thorough investigation into the cause.

"We have a threshold anything of a loss of $500,000 or above, we automatically request an investigation. The Michigan State Police Fire Investigator will look into the cause of the fire," Conway said.

Firefighters cleared the scene just after 9 a.m.

There were no injuries.
